How to Deal With Power Cuts
No matter how prepared we think we are, there’s always something that takes us by surprise. When it comes to power cuts we always think we have it covered, a few candles and a torch and we’ll be fine, however this is usually far from true because there’s always something we haven’t considered.
A power cut can result in hazardous situations especially if you have a team of people working for you.
This could be on a construction site or in a shop, or at an event such as a music festival. It won’t be enough to have a few candles or a large torch to sort this one out, and you may well find that the situation can escalate pretty quickly.
Even in a domestic property, a power cut can take you by surprise.
Even if you’re not in a situation where you’re running a small team or an event with several different balls in the air, even in a domestic property you can be placed in a situation where everything is getting out of hand pretty quickly.
Storms and blizzards are common in winter and early spring.
We know that throughout the winter months and early spring, storms will be random, quick to hit and just as quick to leave the area, leaving nothing but devastation in its wake. An unexpected power cut can also last for a short time or a longer period of time, sometimes extending into days and even weeks.
Be as prepared as you can.
If you hear there’s a storm on the horizon and know it could cause blackouts then make sure you’re prepared, make sure you have plenty of water, preferably boiled beforehand, plenty of food that doesn’t expire quickly such as canned food, and this will keep you going until the power comes back on. You could try using a camp stove to cook and heat water on. Always try to find a way of keeping in touch with family and friends during a power outage so they know you're safe.
Sometimes power cuts can make things a little bit crazy.
It may come on and off several times before dying eventually. That is, until an engineer comes to repair the fault following a storm or whatever else has caused the power outage. With this in mind, it’s best to make sure you switch off the power, especially at the boiler, and only leave one thing on, like a light switch, so you’ll know when the power has come back on.
If you’re expecting a long term power outage as opposed to a short term one, then first aid, candles and portable lighting are not going to cut it. Yes, to the first aid, but add a much more powerful source of power to the mix because this could be a long one. This is where a generator comes in handy. This is a form of power that will rescue you from the pain of endless days in the cold without warmth or heat.
